Wapiti District Website

www.wapiti.cpcbsa.org is up and updated.   We have put most items you need on that website along with contact emails.   Each unit is also listed with a contact.  If you would like to have that contact changed please let Todd McDonald know.  Each month a copy of this newsletter will also be listed.  Take some time to check out the new site.

How to do a Unit Budget?

This year as part of the new Journey to Excellence standards all units are to complete a budget as a part of your annual plan.   A quick look at the previous years Bank Statements you should be able to find your income items for Registration, Dues, Fundraising, Summer Camp and other income.   In addition, should be able to identify expenses for Registration, Recognition, Outings, Summer Camp, unit meetings, and other expenses.   At the end of the year did you have a positive or negative balance?   Do you have enough left over in your account after a year to cover at least one years charter renewal fees?   Your Commissioner Staff will stand ready to help your unit prepare a budget.

All Leaders update your MyScouting.org profileEveryone was required to go online and create a MyScouting account to complete your youth protection.   Now is the time to have all leaders update their MyScouting profile with your membership ID number.  This will ensure that all your online training gets recorded on Scoutnet.   Also, Each unit should update your BeAScout information on MyScouting.org.   BeAScout directs people interested in joining Scouting directly to you.

Journey to Excellence: A Unit Guide to a Quality Program for our Scouts.

The Quality unit program has changed.  It is now called Journey to Excellence.   To be a quality unit your boys will need to advance, have trained leaders, attend summer camp, have an annual program plan, active recruitment campaign, an exciting outdoor program, and plenty of service opportunities.   Each month we will be tracking our progress throughout the year.   Review the requirements with your committee and work to become a Gold unit in 2011.

NYLT Training is for your Scouts.

National Youth Leadership Training is operated by the Cascade Pacific Council under the direction of the council Training Committee and the Program Department. It is an exciting, action based program designed to provide youth members of the B.S.A.with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.Successfully completing NYLT is the prerequisite for attending the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience , NAYLE, offered annually at the Philmont National Training Center. your Scouts will benefit from this experience. Sign up at www.cpcbsa.org/register.

CAMPING

CAMP: Mind the Two Week Deadline.

Two weeks prior to attending Camp is the last deadline to drop youth without paying the full fee.   Even if you have a legitimate reason for someone dropping out, you will need to pay the full fee for all the youth as of this two week deadline.   If a youth unable to attend you will then fill out a refund request.   This will be reviewed and refunds will be made throughout the summer.    The best advice is to reduce your numbers of youth down to who have paid you by this two week deadline.   You will be able to pay for them if they attend.

2012 Boy Scout Summer Camp

All Troops should plan on Signing up for 2012 Summer Camp now.   At your next PLC discuss with the boys their plans and preferences and reserve your spot.   To be early is to be ontime, to be ontime is to be late, to be late is unacceptable.

Sign up for 2011 Family Camp

Cascade Pacific Council offers several exciting family camping opportunities for members’ families.  These outdoor events are offered to help families find fun, affordable things to do in the outdoors and family-friendly locations.  Camps include Labor Day Family Camp at the Beach. September 2-5th.  Girls Camp at Gilbert Ranch.  August 7-9th.  Check the Wapiti Website for more info.

Send your Son on a trip of a lifetime! 2013 National Jamboree.

Our Scouts are heading to Washington DC and

The Summit: Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia for 2013 National Jamboree.   The Cascade Pacific Council will be sending hundreds of scouts to the Jamboree during the summer of 2013. We need plenty of qualified adults to help lead our youth on this great experience. Youth and Adult Leader applications are now being accepted by the National Jamboree committee. All the details can be found on the council website.

Plan Your Units Progam

“If you fail to plan then you plan to fail”.   It is time to conduct your annual program plan.   Packets with resources and calendars were handed out at the May Roundtable.   Sit down and map out your monthly unit activities, secure facilities, assign duties, and get ready for FUN!  Most importantly develop a unit budget and spending plan.   Included this year in your packets is an Ideal Year of Scouting budget planning sheet.   Look for ways to fundraise your entire program.   Make sure you put the Popcorn Sale and Spring Sale on your list to ensure well funded program.

MEMBERSHIP

Project Tiger a Great Success

This Spring we worked as a team to Identify Kindergarten families and bring them into Scouting.   Over 60 new Tiger Families have been Identified and at least 8 new Tiger Leaders have been recruited.   Lets finish off by registering the youth and leaders this month and get the new Tiger Leaders through online Training.

Fall Recruitment Starts Now.

Lets all take time and be organized in our planning for our fall recruitment.   Some Key things that need to be done.

1. Be committed to growth.   Set your sights on filling all of your dens and having a strong tiger den.

2. Set your date for the Fall Join Night.

3. Attend the Recruitment Kickoff  on August 11th at Tigard LDS Church 7pm-8:30pm.

4. Get creative on how you invite youth to join.

5. Try to recruit your Tiger Leader before the Join night.

Do Not

1. Wait until the last minute to put things in place.

2. Make your September Pack Meeting your Join Night.

3. Assume parents know about what Scouting is about.

4. We can all have strong packs with strong leaders if we plan ahead, be       committed to growth, and think creatively.

Webelos Year does not end until Camp.

All second year Webelos will have the opportunity to join Boy Scouts next Spring.   Webelos and their parents need to understand that the Webelos experience ends with Boy Scout Camp.    Scoutmasters, Webelos Leaders, Pack Committees, and Webelos parents need to work together to promote this great adventure. (Note: This concept is to promote boys crossing over into troops.)

Fundraising

Popcorn Sale Sign-ups Begin!

What could you do with an extra $5000.  –Pay for camp? Purchase equiptment? High adventure?  Sign up your unit to take part in the 2011 Popcorn Sale.   This Fall you unit can sell enough popcorn to meet all the income needs for the entire year.  Your unit can tailor the sale to meet your needs:  You can use the Show and Deliver method where you take the product door to door.  Or just go out and take orders to be delivered at a later date.   Set up a booth at a community event or plan your own special super sale day.  You can also have an online sales campaign.  Please submit Popcorn coordinator to Todd McDonald or Cindy Hillyard.

ACTIVITIES

Contact Paul at pgrun@systemfabricworks.com

Website change for reporting Service Hours. If you have tried logging on to Good Turn for America you will notice you are now being redirected to a Journey to Excellence Web Site.  On the right side of the JTE page is a link to log your service hours.  The actual link is https://scoutnet.scouting.org/gtfa/ui/security/login.aspx. All the log in info and reporting is the same after you go to this page.   Please log in and submit your hours.

TRAINING

Time to update your training records.

During the Charter Renewal time it is important make sure all of your leaders are credited with the appropriate training.   There is a form available to submit training changes.   There are many reasons why someone might not be credited a training course they have attended.   You will need to know when they were trained and the specific courses taken.   Turn these forms in directly to Todd McDonald.
